Downloading Xcode

The first step of programming is getting the necessary tools on your computer. You will need an Apple computer (Mac) and a decent internet connection to get started. We recommend having a minimum of 10GB of storage available for the download and installation of Xcode and any additional tools.

Open the App Store

Click on the “Apple” icon in the top left corner of your screen, then select “App Store…”.  Search the App Store for “Xcode”.  The first app should be what you’re looking for and is shown with a blue icon and a hammer.  Click the download button to start the download.

The download is nearly 4GB and depending on your internet speed, may take a while. Once the download has finished, it should automatically open allowing you to install Xcode to your hard drive.

Xcode should now be in the familiar “Applications” directory and you can drag it out to the dock for convenience (if you choose). Double clicking it will open Xcode and it may prompt you to download additional tools or SDKs (Choose Yes, if so).
